In Leicestershire, we have a fundamental petcare research centre, the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition, which is recognized as one of the world’s leading scientific authorities in the field of pet nutrition and wellbeing. We have an amazing opportunity within the Behaviour and Training team at Waltham, focused on the training of animals to take part in our studies in our centre.

 

Our researchers work across multiple disciplines that are linked to pet nutrition and health. Such disciplines include nutrient requirements for different pet life stages and lifestyles, gastrointestinal health, energy requirements, immune function, skin and coat condition, oral health, feeding behaviour, and clinical nutrition.

There are several new and exciting opportunities to join the behaviour and training team at Waltham. You will be working alongside other likeminded, passionate animal trainers, training our animals to take part in our studies. There are opportunities to interact with numerous colleagues within other teams on site on a daily basis. Our team aims to provide animals behaviourally fit and ready for the studies that they will take part in with the enjoyment of training session. Within the team there is also the opportunity to train other members of staff to deliver standard training with our dogs and cats.

 

The purpose of this role is to deliver day to day direct training with both dog and cats of all life stages, measuring the training success, changing and modifying your approach depending on the individual’s needs. The role provides opportunities to develop your own expertise in animal training, welfare and behaviour allowing you to develop and demonstrate your skills and competence in building relationships across teams, motivating others and delivering results that add value for WPN and the wider business.

In this role you will:

  • Deliver trial related training to pets of all species (canine and feline), ages and breed.
  • Perform non-regulated research procedures, e.g. saliva collection.
  • Enable regulated research procedures, by holding pets or cueing pets for position for the personal licensees who perform the procedures.
  • To drive life and core skill training to pets with special behavioural or other needs by training others.
  • To deliver life and core skill training to kittens and puppies.
  • To accurately record relevant data for measuring training progress in relevant data bases.
  • Contributing to the further development of WALTHAM animal welfare standards, thus ensuring that WALTHAM continues to deliver outstanding care to its animal population.
  • The role will be responsible for some revenue budget directly linked to animal welfare, of approximately £500. 

 

To do this role, you will need:

  • A good general education (grade C or above in GCSE or equivalent in maths, English and a science) is essential.
  • A higher/professional qualification(s) (e.g. A-level, HND) is desirable.
  • A relevant degree, e.g. a BSc in Animal Behaviour or any other animal based qualification is preferable
  • An excellent working knowledge of learning theory and principles of animal training is essential. 
  • An excellent understanding of feline and canine communication and behaviour is essential.
  • Practical experience of training animals is essential.
  • A flexible working style, good communication and planning and organisation skills and proven ability to work in a team are all essential.
  • Good numeracy, attention to detail and computer literacy is essential to enable the data collection and data handling required of the role.
