Title:                      Pilot Plant Senior Technician

Reports To:           Process Development Engineer

Level:                     B4

Purpose of Role:

This position is responsible for the onsite facilitation and execution of all pilot plant experimentation and ensuring compliance with all required safety protocols on the site. The major activities include conducting all safety protocols, the analysis of test matrixes, operation of equipment, procurement of test materials, documentation of results, and recommendation of key next steps.    


Principal Accountabilities


  • Set up pilot plant equipment and prepare resources based on test design and parameters
  • Responsible for maintaining associate safety and food safety at all times in the Facility
  • Operate a wide range of equipment including existing systems and new technology
  • Document all critical testing criteria and critical observations throughout experimentation
  • Document and catalogue required quality control documents including laboratory analyses
  • Document pilot plant trials,  interpret results, and recommend action plan
  • Manage records and receive inventory to and from the Facility. Inform the Project leader when a new product or raw material needs to be ordered.
  • Support Quality control for finished product produced in the Facility and ensure that all products leaving the site are safe.
  • Use creativity and innovation to solve mechanical or organizational problems occurring during experiments, test trials and production runs. React to getting assignments completed in a timely, effective manner.
  • Plan, collect materials for, and execute trial production and development tests.
  • Update and support develop Standard Operating Procedures and LOTO procedures for equipment and procedures in the Facility.
  • Collect and analyse data on critical process parameters to draw conclusive decisions from results.
  • Interact with PALS Research Project Leaders and Program Director to discuss test objectives and results.
  • Clean and sanitize equipment/machinery and plant facility according to good manufacturing and sanitation practices.
  • Perform basic equipment and facility maintenance when needed.
  • Operate site utilities.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.




  • Minimum associate degree in engineering or engineering technologies required
  • Strong mechanical skills and strong knowledge of food manufacturing including sterilization and extrusion
  • Clear and open communication (written and verbal) skills combined with problem solving and troubleshooting skills needed to maintain high team efficiency.
  • Demonstrable competencies such as Self Development, Delivering Consistent Results, Dealing with Ambiguity, Action Oriented, and Creativity.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must have ability to learn to operate any of the process equipment, as well as understand process and product testing requirements.

  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, and Powerpoint).

  • Ability to travel and willingness to work at other locations within the local area.
  • Ability to lift 55 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights.
  • Ability to drive a forklift and pallet jack.


Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S in Process, Food, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • A broad and diverse knowledge of food production, scheduling and maintenance
  • Safety experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of safety and environmental rules & regulations
