Position Title:                   Strategic Sourcing Manager

Purpose of Role & Scope:

The Strategic Sourcing Manager is responsible for the strategic procurement of Rigid packaging for Mars Wrigley North America.  This role also serves on the Business Leadership Team supporting our Seasonal business. This role is accountable for Developing and implement sourcing strategy that ensures supply, maximizes value for money, and improves quality for $55M North American spend in the rigid packaging categories, including tubs, lids and rigid containers. Must utilize procurement knowledge to collaborate with internal team and support business growth, perform category analysis, create appropriate strategies, qualify and manage supplier performance, and prioritize and manage competing needs.



Principal Accountabilities

  • Utilize strategic sourcing methodology to perform category analysis, develop category strategies, source, negotiate contracts and manage suppliers to deliver total lowest cost materials, ensure speed to market, value creation and mitigate the supply risks.  Intimately understands the category markets and cost drivers and develops annual budgets for the Region.


  • Drive efforts to leverage supplier resources to bring new ideas and products/ commodities/services, including new packaging and capacity to support our growth aspirations.


  • Identify and execute productivity opportunities from a Commercial and overall business perspective.


  • Drive an effective relationship with key stakeholders to deliver competitive and market advantages through superior analysis, strategy, judgment, and execution.  Ensure delivery of business plans at or ahead of targets & plans and appropriate Commercial representation in internal business processes (especially Seasonal).


  • Deliver market trend, market development information and analysis to drive business understanding of these markets and how best to utilize the capabilities of suppliers and industry developments to deliver a competitive advantage to Mars Wrigley.  This includes leading creation and implementation of strategic supplier initiatives to deliver sustained competitive advantage.


  • Identify and implement novel and creative means for reducing costs, improving quality or otherwise improving total value for money.  This includes networking within the Mars Global Commercial community for best practices & ideas for reapplication.


  • Ensure supply chain security and contingency plans to secure business needs and provide recommendations/execute as appropriate.


  • Increase revenue for supported business by leading the sourcing of innovative packaging


  • Work together with Quality Assurance and Regulatory to ensure all packaging in compliance with all requirements



Key Functional Skills/Knowledge

  • Proven leader who has demonstrated the openness to act as a team player, and situational leadership within peer group to influence business strategy. 
  • Ability to influence others not in direct span of control.
  • Proven ability to prioritize activities appropriately and make trade-off decisions as appropriate.
  • Excellent analytical skills for financial assessments and issue identification, along with flexible thinking to adapt to changing markets.
  • Knowledge of P&L and YOY cost savings metrics
  • Progressive experience utilizing strategic sourcing methodology
  • Perform benchmarking and spend analysis
  • Identify and develop a supply base
  • Forecast price volatility leveraging market indicators (macro and micro), define means to protect the business against the volatility and manage variance



Required Experiences & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, engineering, supply chain or related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in sourcing field.
  • Ability to convey communications clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent PC skills: MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), SAP, Outlook
  • Experience with “Strategic Sourcing Techniques” such as managing value stream, lean concepts, contractual alternatives, and buying theories
  • Strong project management skills in support of cross functional team activities
  • Exceptional interpersonal, team building, and conflict management skills
  • Ability to demonstrate proven results with contract reading, writing and negotiation


Preferred Experiences & Education

  • MBA in relevant field
  • 7+ years’ experience working in sourcing field, consumer product goods, and/or packaging experience
  • Experience with eSourcing tools and Ariba preferred
