Purpose

The jobholder will facilitate the needs of the research programme by translating research plans into research practice in the lab through a high degree of technical knowledge and expertise in a key area of research techniques.  Ensure that the laboratories he/she is responsible for are maintained in conditions of utmost safety and quality will compile, and ensure strict adherence to, guidelines for working in the respective laboratories.


Responsibilities

  • Manage three or more research studies to input technical expertise into project planning and to take responsibility for implementing methods for a number of experimental projects based on requirements of the Strategic Research Plan.
  • Keep up to date with state-of-the-art techniques within technical area and develop new and current techniques based on requirements of the Strategic Research Plan.
  • Maintain the laboratory facilities by working to safe laboratory practice and implement Standard Operating Procedures for the laboratories relevant to the role.
  • Collate and present experimental data, with appropriate statistical analysis, to Principle Investigators and /or key internal customers, and contribute to technical discussions in subsequent reports.
  • Ensure data of high scientific quality, that will form the basis of internal and externally publishable work, by designing appropriate methods and utilizing quality control measures in their studies.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed electronic laboratory notebook of all experimental work according to Waltham / Mars Inc. global Laboratory guidelines.  Review and authorize electronic laboratory notebooks of laboratory scientists. 


Context and Scope

  • Direct responsibility for a number of scientific activities at any one time and prioritising the use of their time and of a number of subordinates.
  • Experimental procedures will be developed and carried out in accordance with the research aims of the Research Scientists.
  • Provide training in experimental techniques to Laboratory Scientists and Trial support technicians.
  • Expand current technical skills and develop new techniques through familiarity with the current literature and attending training courses and conferences where appropriate.
  • Provide regular progress reports and data analysis will be submitted to the appropriate teams.
  • Data handling will require familiarity with a range of computer software packages.
  • Experimental procedures must meet stringent quality standards to ensure suitability for scientific publications and presentations both internally to business and externally to the scientific community.
  • Need to communicate clearly with various levels of personnel at Primary site, PHNC and external contacts such as service engineers and visitors to PHNC.

 

Relevant Quantitative and Budget Information
Financial responsibility:  Consumable costs of at least $75K per year (e.g. kits, equipment and reagents)

Staff:  Supervising or mentoring two or more indirect subordinates (associates and contract staffs) ensure data generated


Qualifications


Education

  • Required PhD in cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, nutrition or relevant scientific discipline. 


Knowledge/Experience

  • Must have experience of working in industrial or research laboratory: prefer to have method development for biology laboratory 
  • Ability to independently conduct laboratory based research projects; planning, designing, executing, interpreting data and reporting research findings in written and verbal communication.
  • Specialist knowledge of techniques in one of the following scientific areas is essential: Biochemistry, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Cell Culture and Biological functional assays.
  • Quality assurance: Knowledge of quality management system and HSE management systems
  • Computer competency (Word, Excel, Power Point, JMP, ELN)
