Utilities Maintenance Technician

Job Purpose/Overview

Mars Chocolate North America is looking for Utilities Maintenance Technician in Hackettstown, NJ. This role focuses on steam, compressed air, and refrigeration. 

The Utilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for effective development and execution of maintenance and improvement efforts throughout the site, with a focus area of facilities and utility systems.  The individual must have the technical knowledge and experience to determine technical solutions to problems, communication skills to “sell” the need for these improvements and acquire funding, and the project management skills to effectively implement them.

  • Inspect equipment on a regular basis
  • Monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges
  • Record meter and gauge readings and operational data
  • Perform regular maintenance on equipment.
  • Record maintenance activities in SAP.
  • Ensure safety standards are met
  • Work with Site Engineers, Central Engineers, Engineering Technicians, Site Support Groups, (SAR, WWTP) and contract designers to identify and co-ordinate detailed design, installation, and start-up of new or modified facilities and systems.
  • Co-ordinate efforts to properly prioritize and seek funding for needed improvements.
  • Be an integral team player and leader in continuous improvement projects where appropriate, providing the necessary technical and strategic leadership for project success.  This will include a consultant role in support of the Central Engineering group projects when needed.
  • Oversee equipment and system checkout, troubleshooting, and technical support as required to insure timely and efficient project startups.
  • Experience identifying training needs, developing training programs, and facilitating the training of associates in support of project installations and operations

Job Specifications/Qualifications

Education & Professional Qualification


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess a fundamental understanding of boiler operations
  • New Jersey Blue, Red, or Gold Boiler Operators Seal.
  • Technical Degree/Trade Certification or 5 years of experience required in a boiler operations role  
  • 5 years’ experience in an industrial maintenance role
  • Experience in the following industrial areas:
  • Electricity & motor controls
  • Controls & instrumentation
  • Pneumatics & hydraulics
  • Mechanical systems
  • Predictive maintenance
  • System analysis & troubleshooting
  • Ability to do shift work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office, especially Excel & PowerPoint 
  • Physically able to lift and transport loads up 60 lbs unassisted, across all types of terrain such as typically found on construction sites
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolds
  • Mentally and physically able to operate effectively at heights well above floor level, and inside small, confined spaces.
  • Ability and availability to work a rotating swing shift.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Internally driven, self-starter with track record of achievement/results
  • Successful Completion of a drug and background screen


  • Associate's degree in a technical discipline, preferably in Industrial/Facilities Maintenance.

Key Functional Competencies & Technical Skills

  • Possess a fundamental understanding of electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic schematics and mechanical drawings in order to solve problems in a timely manner.
  • Ability to troubleshoot ac/dc electrical components including motor starters, switches and sensors found on all assigned equipment using basic test equipment such as multi-meters and amp probes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic HVAC and facilities systems.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed to support production needs and to conduct multi-task work in a very fast paced work environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent lifting/carrying (10-50 lbs.).
  • Frequent pushing/pulling (50-200 lbs.).
  • Frequent handling/gripping/bending/stooping.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights off a ladder or platform, climb stairs, leaning over equipment.
  • Ability to stand and / or work on feet for extended periods (minimum eight hours in one shift).
  • Ability to walk 1 to 2 miles a shift within the facility.
  • Ability to work a rotating 12hr. swing shift.
