Dual Site Locations: Germantown, MD is the primary location site. McLean, Virginia office secondary as required.

 

Purpose of the Role:
The Senior Manager, Cocoa Health Science Communications will play a key role in advancing the visibility and understanding among media, external opinion leaders, and the general public of the industry-leading research Mars conducts in the areas of cocoa health science primarily, with secondary support for plant science and material science related to cocoa.  Through the development and deployment of strategic communications strategies, this Associate will protect and enhance the public perception of this work, in support of building the broader reputation of Mars, Incorporated as a science-based company


Key Responsibilities:

  • Communications Strategy Development:  Build and execute an overarching communications strategy to protect and enhance the reputation of Mars Cocoa Science, including through management of agency resources and in close collaboration with Mars, Incorporated Corporate Affairs colleagues.
  • Key Opinion Leader Engagement: Develop and deploy a framework for mapping and building relationships with key opinion leaders in the scientific and medical communities who are credible and influential in the area of bioactive research.   Manage the ongoing engagement of Mars Cocoa Science with these opinion leaders to build understanding and secure endorsement of our work. Activate opinion leader network in publicly supporting the work of Mars Cocoa Science through media interviews, speaking engagements and opinion pieces, on both a proactive and responsive basis. Manage metrics to understand the impact of these engagements.
  • Media Relations: Create and activate a proactive strategy for building relationships with relevant media influencers across both mass-market and specialized trade outlets, with reach to both traditional and social channels. Develop a comprehensive media campaign and manage the calendar of engagements to create a regular cadence of positive coverage.  Develop and deliver media training to equip Mars Cocoa Science leaders and external opinion leader network in driving positive messages and in productivity addressing critiques. Manage metrics to understand the impact of these engagements.
  • Issues & Crisis Management:  Lead development of scenario plans, position statements and messaging to anticipate, preempt and actively address critical or controversial coverage related to the work of Mars Cocoa Science.  Manage external activation of response plans as well as internal alerting and escalation processes, including, if necessary, activation of the Mars CALM process.
  • Public Affairs:  Support development of plans to map and engage governmental and/or policymaking stakeholders who are relevant to the work of Mars Cocoa Science.  Partner with Mars, Incorporated Public Affairs to develop and deliver advocacy plans to engage in key policy challenges or opportunities relevant to our research.   Build internal connections to provide Mars Cocoa Science insight to development of broader Mars, Incorporated objectives in policy areas such as health & wellbeing, sustainability, and industry-funded research.

 

 

Key Skills Required:

  • Proven ability to build relationships with media and opinion leaders, preferably with an existing professional network established with relevant specialists
  • Strong communicator, with ability to understand and clearly articulate complex technical  issues
  • Proven experience in delivering effective media and advocacy campaigns, and in managing crises

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • 10 years in corporate communications, scientific communications and/or media relations
  • Experience working in the scientific, medical and/or pharmaceutical industries preferred
