Job Summary

The Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager is responsible for a team of 4 Sourcing professionals with the responsibility for $500 million in animal proteins and fats spend for the North America Petcare business.  This role is pivotal to our business given Primes make up the largest expense in our business and the strategic nature of animal proteins and fats in our products.  The Senior Manager will be responsible and accountable for leading this team to create sourcing plans that deliver Quality, Service, Cost Savings of 4% or greater, Cash Improvement, and Product Innovation for our business.  This role will likely sit on a Business Management Team representing Commercial.  As a BMT member, this role needs to influence the business strategy and ensuring Commercial plans are integrated to meet the business needs.   

 

The role operates in a pet friendly, open office environment supporting natural pet nutrition.

 

 

Principal Accountabilities

  • Lead the creation and direct the implementation of strategic sourcing initiatives in the areas of ingredients and/or packaging for the Petcare NA business delivering a target ‘value improvement’ of 4-6% of the total spend.
  • Lead the cash improvement program related to suppliers in assigned categories. Deliver incremental cash improvement year on year.
  • Drive an effective relationship with key internal clients, especially with R&D and Marketing to ensure the delivery of business plans at or ahead of targets & plans. This involves regional and global counterparts in order to ensure appropriate Commercial representation in internal business processes.
  • Bring the best of the outside in.  Work with suppliers and R&D to drive suppliers’ ideas through the business and execute ‘game changing’ strategic sourcing plans for major spend categories.
  • Lead and develop a team of 4 Commercial associates to ensure that all business processes, Commercial guidelines and the Finance Manual are understood. This includes driving a robust Commercial operating environment.
  • Deliver market trend information and analysis to enable the business to understand relevant markets, opportunities, and constraints.
  • Coach and develop team talent.  Provide functional direction to direct team and visible leadership across the Commercial team.
  • Lead major programs within the Do-It-Best Global Pet Care program. Own major projects, deliverables, and interact with other functions to enable these results.

Decisions:     

  • Procure the $500 million of animal proteins and fats and manage associated commodity risk.  
  • Deliver value for money given the dynamic commodity markets. Decisions in this area can significantly affect BU profit and/or cause the business to cut investment spending in order to cover cost pressures.
  • Supplier selection and all business commitments for the portfolio of the annual volume, within the limits of the Finance Manual and the Mars Quality Manual (MQM).
  • Prediction of costs, to maximize accuracy and delivery of the Pet BU’s business plan and P&L projections. Sets annual cost standards for all ingredients.
  • Make contractual commitments on behalf of Mars Petcare North America within the framework of the Finance Manual and Unit Limits of Authority.
  • Career planning, coaching, and development plans for direct reports.

Requirements and Preferred Experience

 

Required

  • 5+ years of experience in large-scale strategic procurement and/or directly relevant supply chain discipline.
  • Experience in managing dynamic business environments, where price stability, supply availability and potential business outcomes were under continuous pressure and change.
  • 3+ years of experience in leading and managing multiple associates and cross-functional teams.

 

Preferred

  • Experience in agricultural commodity price risk management and hedging.
  • MBA
