Job title:             Network Sanitation Operations Manager

Overview

This position is responsible for establishing and coordinating the Sanitation and Integrated Pest Management operations for the Mars Pet Care North America (MPCNA) Manufacturing Organization. The Network Operations Manager (NOM) must work closely with all of the following roles and associates to effectively lead and influence the pet care business: the Petcare Supply Manufacturing Directors (Dry Scale + Wet, and Premium + Care/Treats), the Dry QFS Microbiologist, the Regional Q&FS Managers, the Operational Capability Manager Q&FS, the Operations NOMs, the Manufacturing Site Managers, and other key stakeholders within the business. This also includes such groups as the Site Supply Teams & Quality and Global Engineering, to ensure that the right strategic projects & procedures are coordinated and completed in a timely manner in order to meet the Sanitation, the IPM, and the Quality, & Food Safety Standards.  A key function of this role includes management and oversight of the Integrated Pest Management (Pest Control) Program for the following sectors: The Dry Scale sites, the Dry Premium sites, the AnPro meal sites, the Care & Treats sites, the Wet Sites, the R&D Pilot Plant site, and any overflow warehouse space attached to these manufacturing sites. Support may also be required for remaining warehouse and distribution centers within the U.S. and Canada that are part of the MPCNA business. Additionally, this role will assist the Manufacturing and Sanitation teams in maintaining operational excellence through effective sanitation, effective operational projects execution, and oversight for various Sanitation & Food Safety Work Streams. As part of the Pest Management component, this role will include interaction with Pest Control Services corporate representatives and the Mars IPM consultant. This role will also include assuring that vendor assessments for Pest Control and Chemical vendors at regional sites are performed, as well as performing site Sanitation/IPM/GMP Annual Audits of specified sites and providing the feedback to those sites on ratings and performance as well as potential gaps needing CAPA driven solutions. This role will also oversee responsibility in providing development recommendations and avenues of development for site Sanitation Managers, in order to strengthen the knowledge and capability of each site Sanitation Manager. In addition, participation in all NA and Global Sanitation/Micro Mitigation Work Streams is expected.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop the sanitation strategy and drive through sanitation managers at the manufacturing sites. 
  • Responsible dotted line of all Sanitation managers at the sites (14 B5’s).
  • Identify and Promote new technologies and strategies for both efficiency and efficacy continuous improvements
  • Sanitary Design and Sanitation Program Development across network
  • Program evaluations and gap Assessments to drive improvements and mitigation efforts for Food Safety results
  • Develops Sanitation Manager at production sites
  • Audits site Hygiene Programs and coaches for continuous improvements
  • Oversight of Food Safety & Sanitation Initiatives for Region based upon corporate mandates and protocols/policies
  • Sanitary Design Expertise and Consultation
  • Provide guidance in the planning, design, and prioritization of business initiatives and projects with Sanitation, Pest Management, and Food Safety, as defined by the Manufacturing Directors. 
  • Lead and oversee key Supply initiatives by working closely with the Manufacturing Director to manage sanitation and food safety projects, collaborate with other team leaders, resolve issues, and drive the success of business initiatives. This includes driving Best Practices at all sites, auditing against Sanitation and IPM metrics at all sites, and assuring development of Sanitation and site leadership at all sites in microbial mitigation and pest elimination practices and processes.
  • Responsible for managing with Site Managers to overcome obstacles that prevent adherence and ultimately improve plant sanitation and food safety operations. 
  • Support talent development by working with Manufacturing Leadership Teams in sanitation processes and practices.
  • Identify the major business benefits and ensure they are delivered to the business.  Manage the development of current and target KPIs for each major sanitation, quality, and food safety business process.  Establish and manage the tracking mechanism to monitor KPI performance and business benefits.
  • Primary liaison with the sites, quality teams, and central functions to communicate plans for plants with content focused on change management, training, benefits, deliverables and timelines as related to sanitation, food safety and quality.
  • Ensure all required adjustments and changes are implemented effectively at the site level, with minimal business disruption.

 

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelors' Degree in Food Safety, Microbiology, Engineering, Sciences, or relevant technical discipline and/or experience

 

Knowledge/Experience

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 50 - 80% of the time.
  • 10 years of experience in Sanitation and Manufacturing
  • Lean management system and selected Lean tool application
  • 8 years of experience in Plant Quality/Sanitation Systems required
  • 6 years of managerial experience with demonstrated ability and desire to work   with people, both individually as well as in teams
  • Broad understanding of major functions within a manufacturing plant and the ability to work directly with individuals at all levels and functions
  • Excellent analytical skills and trouble-shooting ability/Root Cause Analysis Training
  • Willing to work weekends, night shifts, and holidays as necessary
  • Experience in food and/or pharmaceutical manufacturing industry preferred
  • Understanding of microbiological organisms and their impact on process design, sanitary design and sanitation preferred
