Dairy Technical Head



Salary: £49k-£74k dependant on experience


This is a great opportunity to leverage your technical expertise in a fast paced and entrepreneurial business to delivery business growth in a quality way. Within this role you will grow your technical leadership, get lots of exposure to senior management and ample opportunity to improve business acumen.

In this role you will sit in the R&D team reporting into the R&D Head, as Technical Head of Milk and Dairy you will be an integral part of the Milk Drinks category business team, delivering profitable growth in the category by creating new penetration for our brands through 3rd party manufacturing and distribution partners, in line with Mars standards and principles.

You will provide technical leadership and management of the Drinks category (i.e., Ready to Drink (RTD) beverages).


What are we looking for?

This role is a technical pillar for MCDT and the wider business in one of our highest risk categories (dairy) specifically milk drinks. Therefore, to be successful in this role you need both technical knowledge and great communication skills to be able to share this knowledge with others.

Degree in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering, Food Technology or similar applied undergraduate discipline 

  Highly desirable:

Postgraduate qualification in dairy processing.

Process technology experience in the Dairy industry


Knowledge and Experience

Proven track record in creating innovative new products & implementing through external partners.

Solid technical understanding of dairy technology, in particular thermal processing and aseptic packaging.

Proven record of problem-solving ability using scientific knowledge & principles including risk management.

High learning agility (e.g. To understand and adopt new systems)

Highly numerate and literate.

Mechanical aptitude.



What would be your key responsibilities?


  • Lead the Drinks category to deliver creative new products & packs through our co-manufacturing partners.
  • Participate in the Drinks Activity Management process, to deliver product, packaging and artwork changes on agreed timescales and budgets
  • Shift the sustainability of our Drinks business, to achieve 100% reusable or recyclable packaging by 2025.
  • Engage with the Head of R&D and the Mars Drinks and Treats (MCDT) Management Team on allocation of resources & prioritisation to deliver technical plans within the Drinks category.
  • Build strong network with technical community in Mars Inc and externally, in the Dairy and RTD categories.
  • Maintain current awareness of all regulatory, industry, consumer, and technology trends as well as the activity of competitors, incorporating these insights into product and pack development

Supplier Quality Assurance

  • Maintain full compliance with our Quality standards .
  • Accountable for supplier selection and development, technical approval, audit management & ongoing quality measurement of RTD beverage co-manufacturers in the EU and CIS region
  • Conduct annual technical audits of our suppliers, ensuring that they demonstrate the expertise & capabilities to produce drinks for Mars that meet all our technical standards.
  • Maintain current, approved technical documentation for all existing and new Drinks SKUs.
  • Ensure all documents are saved in the appropriate shared locations – including Nexus.
  • Update all technical documents as needed and communicate to suppliers, using negotiation skills.
  • Be the primary technical contact for non-conformities & all Q&FS concerns in the Drinks category.
  • Build enduring mutual and trusting relationships with our Drinks co-manufacturers and distributors.
  • Own and manage technical issues that impact on quality, safety, legality, cost, or ability to supply Drinks.


Contribution to R&D and wider MCDT team

  • Actively build the team culture by personally role-modelling appropriate values, behaviours, and attitudes.
  • Provide technical expertise on liquid products (both dairy and vegan), thermal processing and aseptic manufacture to existing and new manufacturing and distribution partners and to Mars units globally.
  • Continue to develop personal capabilities and competences to support a fast-growing business.
