Job Purpose/Overview

  The Supplier Quality & Food Safety Scientist is the point person for implementation and delivery of the Shanghai store Quality & Food Safety Management Program and the continuous improvement of supplied finished goods across all stores. They execute this work via auditing manufacturing processes, internal co-packing processes, and managing non-conformances.  At all points, they are the face of quality; providing training, coaching, & expertise to internal teams and suppliers.


Key Responsibilities 
1. Q&FS Responsibilities (50%)
•    Manage the Shanghai retail location Quality and Food Safety management and drive continuous improvements (i.e. Quality Plans, CAPA’s, PRIMPs/Non-conformances, quality related training material, Mars Global standards, etc.).
•    Communicate with Store and Co-pack Leadership Teams on product quality, food safety and/or store conditions which may have a negative impact on product and work collaboratively to correct the situation.
•    Coordinate the maintenance and reporting of non-conforming product and ensure its proper disposition and documentation.
•    Develop and implement an internal audit schedule for retail location and evaluate annually for effectives/compliance.
•    Assist in the development and delivery of the store’s Q&FS training program for all retail associates.
2. Supplier Quality Responsibilities (50%)
•    Conduct merchandise product audits in Chinese language
•    Report audit findings in English & Chinese
•    Develop supplier’s capabilities
•    Manage non-conformance & follow-up
•    50-70% travel required
•    Communicate effectively with sourcing, buying, and marketing teams


Context and Scope
The Supplier Q&FS Scientist will spend 50% of their time working with finished goods manufacturers (t-shirts, mugs, dispensers, key chains, etc.).  They will perform some of this work remotely through auditing software and some of the auditing on-site at the manufacturer.  They will work with the support center merchant & R&D teams to identify risk and potential mitigation activities at the factory.  The content of the audits focuses on Quality Management Systems, GMPs, and product specific risks combined with customer feedback and non-conformance prevention.


As part of the preparation for supplier auditing, the Supplier Q&FS Scientist will gather information from the store sites (SHA, US locations, EU locations) via the Quality Admin & Site Quality Champions.  They both report out and action information coming in with the manufacturers.


As part of the store team, The Supplier Q&FS Scientist helps the store achieve and maintain Quality goals. In order to achieve these goals, the Q&FS Admin must partner closely with retail associates at all levels (associates, supervisors, managers, directors) to coach and train them into completing key quality tasks. This includes engaging associates to upload documents into the Nexus quality system, supporting consumer complaints through technical input and training, influencing others to complete their internal audits on time. Each week and period they are responsible for reporting on key quality metrics – corrective actions, internal audits, non-conformances (held product), consumer complaints, risk assessment status on new product/experience, and key quality & food safety training. This role is a part of an international quality & food safety team that includes all retail and manufacturing locations at M&M’s Retail. At a minimum, this Q&FS Admin role will collaborate with teammates on a period basis. Additionally, the Q&FS Admin will be supported through weekly phone/video calls with the Q&FS Manager and SQA Manager (located in the United States Support Center) to help prioritize tasks and keep track of their progress against objectives


The Supplier Q&FS Scientist is expected to be present at the store 25%-50% of the time. He/She will cultivate a team attitude, connecting merchandise quality management at the factory level with the finished saleable good and in-store experience.


Job Specifications/Qualifications
•    BS degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Engineering, or related technical field preferred.
•    2-3 years of experience in manufacturing and/or quality & food safety role(s). 
•    Understanding of manufacturing processes (plastics, ceramics, textiles, metals, paper, etc).
•    Ability to read and edit technical drawings and documents in English
•    Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
•    Superior inter-personal skills 
•    Capacity to build relationships internally & externally 
•    Ability to adapt and manage effectively in a changing environment 
•    Ability to efficiently manage multiple initiatives and timelines
•    Ability to act as a bridge for business and technical requirements
Knowledge / Experience    
•    Knowledge of quality management systems, GMP’s, food safety, and regulatory guidelines. 
•    Experience conducting quality & food safety internal and/or external audits. 
•    Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills. Strong questioning and probing skills to discover issues and to verify the accuracy of information, results and data.
•    Full working knowledge of computer software including: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Preferred knowledge of cloud-based software including: SharePoint/OneDrive and Skype for Business.
•    Understanding of ISO9001 and FSSC 22000 standards.
•    Knowledge of pest control management.
•    Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate, influence, negotiate, motivate and lead a cross-functional quality support team.
•    Ability to work independently as well as within a team. 
•    Strong project management skills and ability to prioritize own workload. 
•    Ability to make timely, consistent and well balanced decisions.
•    Effective written and oral communications skill.
•    Presentation skills for delivering training programs and Q&FS program reviews to a wide variety of audiences.
•    Flexibility to adapt to regularly changing priorities and quality issues. 
•    Ability to handle sensitive information.
•    Ability to travel up to 50%-70%
