The Relief Extruder Flex (Apprentice) will train in all areas of converting raw materials into finished petfood by safely and efficiently analyzing and processing raw ingredients through four major areas/systems (extrusion, drying, coating and cooling).  The result shall be high quality pet food that will meet or exceed all quality specifications set by Mars Pet Care u.s.  This position will entail assisting the Extruder Operator utilizing learn-by-working methodology.  Focus areas:   Assisting Extruder Operator as necessary, setting up die plates for existing and future runs, ensuring all sanitation in extrusion is being detailed, maintaining extrusion room housekeeping, learning the operation of the extruders and other related systems, dumping powder, taking density checks, monitor liquid tanks, take bin measurements of liquid tanks, giving breaks for Extruder Operators—with the intent to move to Extruder Operator should a future position become available.  The above must be done following SOPs and in compliance with GMPs and Food for Pets mentality and methodology.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Other duties may be assigned.

1. Responsible for learning and training in the total operation of any combination of the following unit operations.  Operation includes operating all systems, performing all quality checks, conformance reporting and system logs, and troubleshooting all aspects of each system and maintaining area in a clean, orderly, food-safe manner:

 

Extrusion:  Extrude mixed meal to meet all quality specifications and optimize plant capacity.  Includes minimizing changeover times and running extruder at standardized rates or higher.

Drying:  Dry kibbles to meet all quality specifications and optimize plant capacity.

Coating:  Coat kibbles with tallow and digest into the finished kibble according to recipe requirements.

Cooling:  Cools the product after it has been coated

Finished Product:  Optimize product stream and bunker inventory levels.

Housekeeping and Sanitation:  Maintain and Improve appearance to parts racks, floors, walls, parts racks, related processing systems (i.e color room, cooler, tank farm, liquid receiving, etc.)

 

2. Participate in setting strategy for the processing systems to ensure meeting or exceeding production schedule in the most efficient manner possible.

3.  Maintain a safe and clean work environment to promote associate safety and product integrity.

4. Learn to troubleshoot processing systems to optimize performance and take corrective action to ensure product quality while minimizing unnecessary downtime.

5. Assist with preventative and downtime maintenance of area equipment and helps make incremental improvements as necessary.

6. Assist maintenance and engineering to improve and upgrade current systems and equipment and provides input on new projects.

7. Participate in a  high quality team environment through effective teamwork and self-management with a positive attitude.

 

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Participate in problem solving groups as appropriate.

2. Responsible for own safety and for the safety of others which may be affected by others actions.  Demonstrate good judgment and react to unsafe acts and conditions, either by making them safe or reporting them to those in a position to correct them.  Participate in site safety program and actively look for ways to improve site and area safety.

3. Other similar duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Preferred - previous experience within extrusion production that provided fundamental understanding of equipment, process flows, and extrusion theory.

High school diploma or equivalent plus 2-3 years work or military experience (manufacturing environment preferred).

Intermediate math, reading and writing skills.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Effective communications skills, both written and verbal.  Communication skill for accurate transfer of information to plant associates.

Hearing/Speaking ability in person and on the phone.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Mechanical aptitude.

Housekeeping skills and knowledge of GMP's.

Knowledge of personal computers.

Problem-solving skills.

Ability to plan work on a daily basis, work independently and be self motivated.

Ability to work with a team and effectively interacts with other departments.

Organization and time management skills.

Ability to comply with site safety requirements.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to work long hours and be available on a call in basis.

Ability to handle tools or equipment.

Ability to work under tight schedules in high-pressure situations.
