Job description



The Controls Technician independently maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs the electrical and controls systems throughout the facility.  The Controls Technician will plan and perform a variety of production related duties requiring an expert degree of knowledge and skill with equipment such as motors, motor control circuits, power distribution systems up to 600 VAC, sensors, instrumentation, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s), AC drives, DC drives, and servo drives.  This position will provide electrical and controls support for operations and maintenance, in addition to performing preventative and predictive maintenance.





•     Functions independently in electrical controls on assigned equipment.

•     Safety/Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Leader in adhering to safe work practices; Lockout Tagout (LOTO), Confined Space, and all other plant safety requirements related to supporting machinery.

•     Will hold all team members accountable to adhere to safety & GMP practices.

•     Will plan and conduct preventative maintenance and work orders independently.

•     Subject Matter Expert (SME) level knowledge of electrical schematics and ability to maintain and update.     

•     Implement small scope projects in their assigned areas

•     Make improvements as required to electrical PM’s on various manufacturing and packaging equipment, electrical panels, and document activities using computerized maintenance management system (SAP Plant Maintenance).

•     Recognized as being the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the Electrical Controls field

•     Effectively communicate with peers, supervisors, and upper management on a daily basis, and be willing to provide support where needed and complete other duties as assigned.

•     Act as technical resource to operations/maintenance on controls related issues

•     Identify and recommend changes to improve plant performance utilizing current control systems

•     Troubleshoot and analyze control system applications and make necessary modifications to get the systems up and running again

•     Support the introduction to the plant of new control technologies

•     Provide system management and administrative functions for PC and PLC networks, data historians, software version control.






Minimum:  High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:  A technical certificate or diploma in Electrical Maintenance and equivalent work experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.


Related Experience/Requirements:

Minimum:   At least 2 years of experience 

Preferred:   At least 4 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment





•             Ability to work safely and independently while troubleshooting and repairing electrical and controls problems on all equipment in assigned department.

•             Possesses specialized skill sets to include: HMI, PLC, VFD, Servos, and Network Interfaces.

•             Functions as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) with the ability to use PLC software to troubleshoot and calibrate electrical components; including identifying faulty equipment for all assigned equipment.

•             Self-motivated and works independently to solve problems and implement solutions.

•             Maintains good interpersonal skills and develops good working relationships with peers and all levels of management.

•             Good understanding of Operating Systems environments including Microsoft Windows and other Microsoft technologies

•             Ability to analyze system problems and correct them.

•             Understanding of networks including Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet and ProfiBus.

•             Ability to utilize Microsoft Office Applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint



Same as Minimum with the following additions:

* Extensive experience with Rockwell Automation Software Suite

* Extensive experience with Wonderware Intouch

* Extensive experience with PC Hardware and OS


* Extensive experience with Motion Control


* Extensive experience with Electrical Troubleshooting
