Position:  QA Lab Technician

Reports To:  Shift Manager

Location:  Aurora, NE



The QA Lab Technician is responsible for testing incoming ingredients, batches, processing and finished products to assure compliance to company standards.  Part of the work includes monitoring critical control points to ensure adequacy of the plant’s HAACP program along with executing Micro requirements and adherence to Mars Quality and Food Safety systems.  





  1. Responsible for performing chemical testing on ingredients and products such as LECO proteins, ash oven, air oven, acid hydrolysis fats, NIR analysis, mycotoxins, and routing lab functions.   The individual that is selected for the role is expected to become proficient on all lab equipment and Product Standards.
  2. Lead others to achieve results with support.  Assure compliance and make critical decisions as to continuing operation, holding, and/or additional testing for disposition. This requires solid communication and working relationships with all operating areas.
  3. Keep instrumentation accurate by performing necessary calibrations.
  4. Maintain proper record-keeping and instrumental diagnostics in conjunction with pallet tags using I-Track, Word, SAP, RTCIS, Excel, Power Point, NWA, Proficy, and Win-ISI software programs.  There will be some daily and monthly report writing and updating software.
  5. Ensure all HACCP checks are completed in a timely manner
  7. Inspect equipment and areas post clean-up and pre-startup and ensure adherence to site standards.
  8. Support production with NIR and chemical analysis in a timely manner.
  9. Place ingredients and packing material on Hold and analyze prior to receipt and use. 
  10. Execute work items included as part of the micro mitigation effort.  This includes daily swabbing, sampling FP and submitting for testing.
  11. Role Model the 5 principles of Mars and the importance of Quality.
  12. Good working relationship with the QA Lab Techs, QST, Shift Managers, Line Leads, Extruder/Relief Operators, Unloaders and other site associates.
  13. Maintain the sanitation expectations of the lab, surrounding area and equipment.
  14. Troubleshoot issues to ensure continued efficiency
  15. Other duties as assigned such as;
    • Perform Cross Check Program (NIR and Wet Chemistry)
    • Perform net weight capability tests
    • Assist in micro FP sampling, cutback and product submissions
    • Host daily product evaluation (cutback) meeting and reporting
    • Complete the shift management report daily for shift manager review and approval.
  16. Take ownership of a functional / supporting system (i.e. Records, Technical Standards, NIR, PO management, knife/blades, etc.)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively
  • Must be able to work at elevated heights
  • Must be able to adapt to temperature and environmental extremes from hot to cold, dust, dirt and chemicals
  • Computer/Technical Savvy
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to establish good peer relationships




  • Able to conduct various test in the lab and understand the results coming out of the tests.  Individual will have to work with the operating departments on results obtained and has to be able to give direction on potential adjustments to how we run.
  • The lab technician interfaces with all operating departments in the plant as well as external customers and vendors.  They need to be able to understand lab results and be capable of articulating that both internal and external to the site in a professional manner.
  • The lab technician has to work hand-in-hand with shift leaders and other leaders in the plant to ensure we are making, packing, and shipping the right quality product for our customers. 
  • Able to work with all levels of the organization to identify and resolve defects and come up with ideas for improvement.  The lab is almost complete with AM Step 3.  The individual has to be capable of maintaining and improving current standards.
  • Demonstrated strong computer skills especially with the following software or programs:  Excel, Word, I-Track, Power Point, Proficy, SAP.
  • The QA organization is small and requires individuals to be self-driven, reliable, and willing to take the initiative to get the work done.
