Nutrition Science Leader

North America (West Coast preferred)

 

The Nutrition Science Leader role is part of the Mars Advanced Research Institute (MARI).   MARI's mission is to translate cutting edge science & technology to create growth while guided by all elements of the Mars CompassAs a function of the Transformational Corporate Center, MARI plays an important role in linking external expertise and innovation with business units across the enterprise.  The roles key for identifying world-class external experts and managing the external research programs are MARI’s Critical Discipline leaders.

 

The purpose of the role is to create, lead and manage the Nutrition Science Critical Discipline for Mars Incorporated. The role will establish the vision, mission, strategy and network organization of contemporary Nutrition Science institutes and leaders focused on people and pets.   In addition the leader will help shape the agenda across the Mars business segments responding to current and future business opportunities to drive strategic contribution to long-term business sustainability and competitive edge.  In addition to identifying nutrition opportunities of strategic interest to Mars incorporated, the role will be responsible for framing the medium and long term opportunities for Mars at the intersections of multiple science disciplines and health. 

 

The role will inspire and influence Mars business leaders with robust and integrated research programs, ensuring the delivery of a research strategy aligned with Corporate and Segment business goals and scoping future opportunities. The role will create novel intellectual capital and value capture opportunities for the Segments and Mars Incorporated. The role will provide inspiring and developmental leadership to the scientific community within Mars, Incorporated. The lead is known internationally as a Global Expert in the Nutrition field and a thought partner with various universities & research institutes around the world, and will be the key spokesperson for Mars charged with building and strengthening Mars’s reputation in this field.  Another focus of the role will be around strengthening the strategic partnerships with the world leading institutions based in the USA. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

Enhance and expand the Nutrition Science programs, enabling medium-to-long-term innovation across all Segments of Mars, Incorporated; driving and contributing to the long-term business sustainability and competitive edge. Creates a vision and scenarios in which technical opportunities can help achieve segment business goals and leads programs to deliver business ambition, translating science into tangible business benefits.

 

Creates and shapes the science & value capture strategy for the alignment and fit of Nutrition Science programs with the key strategic goals of the Segments.

 

Inspires and influences key business stakeholders (Technology Committee, R&D VPs, regional presidents) by generating a compelling picture of how scientific advances in Nutrition Science will unlock the ability to achieve business objectives and long term strategic success.

 

Executes and delivers program results via the established external network of research and business partners, creating new connections when needed. Ensuring the required resources are available and establishes a governance and a peer review process to guarantee the quality of the science delivered. Participates in S&T strategy sharpening sessions for all segments, through the internal/external peer review process (i.e. Mars Science Advisory Council). Creates and maintains external research advisory boards (RAB) to ensure the highest quality of science.

 

Is the main spokesperson in developing and delivering the Nutrition Science communication strategy for MARI which engages the senior business management population, long term horizon segment activities in the context of consumer trends, markets, regulatory development and changing social/environmental climate.  The role will also be the external facing communications lead in this space for Mars (governments, NGOs, regulatory bodies, and other key forums)

 

Consistently initiates and delivers transformative “solutions” to business challenges that drive business value through Segment Challenges, sustainability/productivity, safety, efficiency and risk mitigation. Leverages external networks and thought leaders in nutrition science to scope new territories for Mars then translates these insights into new opportunities for Mars. 

 

Develops and deploys the strategy and approach for talent management, training and development of the scientists to be implemented across Segments and feed a competency-driven, multi-hub, global team. Develops and maintains an internal community of nutrition scientists to ensure network connectivity, the adoption of best practices and a talent pipeline for future scientists.

 

Leads the creation of multi hub network research programs providing Mars Inc. a unique opportunity for innovation through a multidiscipline research programs with the world leading experts and institutions. Effectively leverages and expands a world class network of external contacts and resources to address research needs (universities, suppliers, etc.), building long term relationship (alliances, collaborations, partnerships) and ensure Mars is at the forefront of cutting edge developments in these areas.

 

Through MARI and the Mars Science Leadership Team, continues to expand, activate and strengthen the interface between science teams in the Mars, Incorporated Segments to maximize synergies which capture value as we transition from fundamental research to intellectual capital creation via the innovation cycle.

 

Job Specifications & Qualifications

Education & Professional: 

PhD in nutrition, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, analytical science or related field.

 

Knowledge & Experience

8-10 years work experience in agriculture, food, health or related industry.

Widely published in scientific journals or via expertise-related books, invited keynote speaking, etc

A deep technical understanding nutrition and molecular microbiology with an established reputation and high scientific credibility externally in this field.  A proven excellent track record in the management of complex science and technology projects, a demonstrated ability in program management, and a demonstrated ability to translate the science to tangible business assets.

Relationship building: Maintains and continuously updates world-class technical networks and collaborations, both internal and external, and across competencies
