An exciting ‘Head of Category Development – Impulse & Space Planning’ opportunity has arisen. Category Leadership is a key strategic priority in the MWC organisation to drive success & growth.


This  role sits on the Category Leadership Team & reports into the Category Leadership Director.

The Category Leadership roles are pivotal roles within the Category Leadership function and are

responsible for setting & leading the category agenda with our retail partners across the business .

These roles are integral to finding new sources of category competitive advantage via elevating our

strategic presence and input in our customers long term agenda setting a motivating vision of success .

This role is also instrumental in playing a role in supporting the Category Leadership Director to setting

the strategic direction for the function.





This role’s purpose is to lead the Impulse Category Development team of 3 category associates and 2 space planning associates; the jobholder will be responsible for the overall leadership and development of these associates.

The role is also responsible for setting & leading the category agenda for the Impulse Channel , through building best in class relationships with our key customers (personally and through the team) and through driving performance and category functional excellence of their 5 direct reports, who are responsible for developing category growth insights based solutions and building best in class customer relationships. Plus driving our strategic approach to Space Planning & Merchandising.






Develop  & Lead Inspiring Category strategy

  • Lead the development and delivery of an inspiring Impulse Category Strategy  aligned to the customer prioritization model and category vision ensuring a strong understanding of the category growth drivers





Drive Category Customer Engagement & Commitment


  • Build strong and influential relationships both internally and externally with senior customer stakeholders, based on delivering shopper, channel and category centric solutions so that Mars is viewed as THE category trusted expert influencing and executing inspiring category plans.


Lead & build Category Leadership Capability to drive our competitive advantage


  • People and Team Leadership – Line manager of 5 associates. Responsible for developing, directing, engaging and leading a high performing team, in line with MWC line manager principles.


Business Planning & Commercial Delivery

  • Responsible for leading Impulse annual category planning internally and externally, delivering against strategic initiatives including seasonal events, driving the perfect store agenda through category fundamentals including space, secondary display and distribution, plus brand initiatives and NPD that drive NSV to meet commercial KPI’s.





1. Education and professional qualification


Degree Educated

2. Knowledge / Experience

 + 5 years experience in category Development or customer facing roles in FMCG

 Line Management experience

 Worked with UK customers

 Can champion the voice of the customer in Mars Wrigley Confectionery

 Data literate – functional expert of Nielsen/ IRI, Kantar

 Experienced at building winning relationships

 Competent and engaging presenter

 Desirable Experience: Experience of execution of Category Vision either from a customer or manufacturer side
